What is a Cedar Shingle?
What Are Cedar Shakes?
Cedar Shakes come in several different types and thickness. The 2 most commonly used types are Handsplit and Tapersawn.
Handsplit shakes are the most common and have a split face, exposed with a naturally rustic appearance and a sawn back. This type comes in 3 thicknesses and different grades: thin (1/4”), medium (1/2”), and heavy (3/4”). While some contractors use thinner, lower grade types, Adept Construction only uses heavy #1 grade.
Tapersawn shakes are sawn on both sides for a less textured look and cleaner appearance. Tapersawn shakes are most commonly 5/8” thick at the base.

The Beauty of Cedar Roofing in Naperville and the Surrounding Areas
Another good thing about cedar is that it is possible to replace and repair parts of the roof without worrying that your replacement shakes or shingles are significantly different in composition from your original shakes or shingles. Over the hundreds of years that cedar has been used, the product has remained unchanged. As cedar advances to its mature stage, it is natural to expect some pieces to need replacement. Individual repairs are possible, and with prompt attention, proactive repairs can extend the life of your roof.
A cedar shake roof can give your home or business a unique look that stands out from other types of roofing. We provide reliable installation, as we do with every project. If you have any questions about the process along the way, our team at Adept Construction will be happy to address them.
