Project at a glance

About the area

Naperville sits along the DuPage River in DuPage and Will counties, about 28 miles west of Chicago’s Loop. Naper Settlement credits Joseph Naper with founding the town in 1831.

What we checked

On a full replacement, the old shingles come off first so the crew can check the roof deck for soft or damaged wood before any new materials go down. That check decides whether the new roof starts on a sound base.

What we did

  1. Removed the old roof.
  2. Installed CertainTeed Landmark Pro shingles in Burnt Sienna.
  3. Installed new gutters in Royal Brown to match the home’s dark trim.
  4. Added Shur-Flo gutter guards.

Why these materials

CertainTeed Landmark Pro shingles. CertainTeed backs Landmark Pro with a lifetime limited, transferable warranty and a UL Class A fire rating. The shingles carry a 15-year, 110 mph wind warranty that can be upgraded to 160 mph, and StreakFighter algae resistance with its own 30-year warranty against the black streaks algae leaves on roofs.

Royal Brown gutters with Shur-Flo guards. The dark brown gutters blend into the Tudor trim, and the guards help keep leaves out of the gutters so water keeps moving off the roof.

Keeping it in good shape

  • Clean the gutters each fall after the leaves drop so melting snow and spring rain can drain away from the roof edge.
  • Check the roof from the ground after severe storms. The National Weather Service Chicago office issues severe thunderstorm and high wind warnings for DuPage and Will counties, and lifted or missing shingles should be looked at before the next storm.
  • Watch for long icicles or ice ridges at the eaves in winter. They can point to attic heat loss and ice dams that push water under the roof edge.
  • Keep attic vents clear of insulation and stored boxes so the attic can stay dry and close to outdoor temperature.
  • Never pressure wash shingles. It strips off the protective granules.
