Why soffit, fascia and gutters go together

Gutters hang from the fascia, and the soffit covers the underside of the roof overhang. Replacing all three at once gives the gutters a solid board to hang from and closes gaps where birds and insects get in.

Keeping it in good shape

  • Clean the gutters each fall after the leaves drop so melting snow and spring rain can drain away from the roof edge.
  • Watch for long icicles or ice ridges at the eaves in winter. They can point to attic heat loss and ice dams that push water under the roof edge.
  • Make sure downspouts carry water several feet away from the foundation.
  • Keep soffit vents clear so the attic can breathe.
  • Check the roof from the ground after severe storms. The National Weather Service Chicago office issues severe thunderstorm and high wind warnings for DuPage and Will counties, and lifted or missing shingles should be looked at before the next storm.
