How a Naperville Roof Replacement Works
Adept Construction is a roof replacement company in Naperville that has replaced roofs on every generation of the city’s housing — the 1960s and ’70s ranches and split-levels north of Ogden Avenue, the 1980s and ’90s subdivisions south of 75th Street, and the newer construction near Route 59 and 95th Street. Here is how a replacement runs.
When a Naperville roof needs replacing
An asphalt shingle roof in this climate lasts 20 to 25 years. Signs it is at the end: granules collecting in the gutters, shingles that are curling, cracked or missing across several areas, more than one active leak, daylight through the attic boards, or hail damage over most of the surface after a storm. A roof with one problem area is usually a repair; a roof with several is a replacement, and we tell you which in writing after a free inspection.
The replacement process
- Inspection and estimate. We measure the roof, check the decking from the attic, note ventilation and flashing, and give you a written, itemized price with the shingle line and color options.
- Tear-off. Every layer of old roofing comes off down to the wood deck. We do not roof over existing shingles.
- Deck repair. Rotted or delaminated sheathing is replaced and priced per sheet, so you see it before we continue.
- Underlayment and ice-and-water shield. Synthetic underlayment over the whole deck, with self-adhering ice-and-water membrane along the eaves, in the valleys and around penetrations — the detail that stops Naperville’s ice dams from getting under the shingles.
- Flashing and ventilation. New drip edge, step flashing at walls and chimneys, pipe boots, and ridge or box vents sized to the attic.
- Shingles. Installed to the manufacturer’s nailing pattern so the warranty holds.
- Cleanup. Debris hauled, gutters cleared, and the yard swept with a magnet for nails.
Does a Naperville roof replacement need a permit?
Not for most homes. The City of Naperville does not require a building permit for an asphalt shingle replacement when the roof sheathing stays in place. A permit is required if sheathing is replaced or the new roof is metal, wood shake, slate or membrane (City of Naperville building permits). When one is needed, we pull it and include the fee on the estimate.
How long it takes
Most Naperville single-family replacements take one to three days. Larger homes, steep pitches, cedar or composite systems and multiple tear-off layers can run to a week. We do not start a tear-off with rain in the forecast.
What a roof replacement costs in Naperville
The price depends on the roof’s size (measured in squares of 100 sq ft), its pitch and number of stories, the system chosen, how many layers come off, and how much decking needs replacing. Architectural asphalt shingle is the least expensive system; composite, cedar shake and flat membrane cost more per square. Typical ranges are explained in our roof replacement cost guide and tear-off cost guide, or request an exact quote.
Roofing Systems We Install in Naperville: Owens Corning Shingles, Cedar, Composite and Flat
Architectural asphalt shingles
The system on roughly nine of ten Naperville replacements. As an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, Adept Construction installs Owens Corning architectural shingles with the manufacturer’s enhanced warranty available; other brands on request. No city permit is needed for a shingle-for-shingle replacement.
Cedar shake
New cedar or cedar-to-cedar replacement on the larger homes in White Eagle, Hobson West and along the DuPage River. Cedar requires a City of Naperville permit. See cedar shake roofing.
Composite (synthetic slate and shake)
The system we recommend most often to Naperville homeowners replacing an aging cedar roof: the same look, half the maintenance, 50-year warranties on most products. See composite roofing.
Flat and low-slope membrane
EPDM, TPO and modified bitumen replacements on commercial buildings along Ogden Avenue, Route 59 and the I-88 corridor, and on flat-roofed additions and garages. Always permitted. See flat roofing and commercial roofing.
Metal and tile
[HOLD — Gerry’s answers to the metal and tile questions decide this paragraph. If yes: “Adept Construction also installs standing-seam metal and clay or concrete tile roofs in Naperville; both require a city permit.” If no: delete the H3 and paragraph, and drop “metal roofing” from anywhere else on the site.]
New roof installation for builders and additions
Yes, Adept Construction installs roofs on new construction in Naperville — additions, garages, and the teardown rebuilds common near downtown and Naperville Central. We work from the builder’s framing inspection through final shingle or membrane, on the builder’s schedule. See our roof installation service.

Licensed, insured and Owens Corning Preferred
Illinois roofing contractor license No. 104.011123 (verify on IDFPR); general liability and workers’ compensation insurance; Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, which lets us offer Owens Corning’s enhanced system warranties; BBB Accredited, A+.
Two warranties on every roof
The manufacturer’s material warranty — up to lifetime on architectural shingles, 50 years on most composite — and Adept Construction’s own 10-year workmanship warranty, both in writing at completion.
Full tear-off, always
We do not lay new shingles over old ones. A second layer hides deck rot, voids most manufacturer warranties, and adds weight the trusses were not sized for.
Insurance-claim replacements
When hail or wind damage covers most of a Naperville roof, the replacement usually runs through the homeowner’s insurance. We document the damage, write the scope, and meet the adjuster. See storm damage and our guide to roof insurance claims in Illinois.

Naperville Roof Replacement FAQs
A Naperville roof replacement is priced by the roof’s size in squares, its pitch and height, the system chosen, the number of layers torn off and any decking replaced. Architectural asphalt shingle is the least expensive; composite, cedar shake and flat membrane cost more per square. Adept Construction provides a free written, itemized estimate; typical ranges are in our roof replacement cost guide.
Not for most homes. The City of Naperville does not require a permit to replace an asphalt shingle roof when the sheathing stays in place. A permit is required for sheathing replacement or for metal, wood shake, slate or membrane roofs. Adept Construction pulls the permit when one is needed. Source: City of Naperville building permits.
Most Naperville single-family roof replacements by Adept Construction take one to three days. Larger homes, steep pitches, cedar or composite systems and multiple tear-off layers can take up to a week. Weather is the usual cause of delay.

A roof over 20 years old, shedding granules, with several damaged areas, more than one leak or hail damage across most of the surface usually needs replacement. A roof with one problem area usually needs repair. Adept Construction inspects at no charge and gives the recommendation in writing.
